In most cases, yes. You need to match the voltage (most power wheelchairs use 12V or 24V systems) and ensure the physical dimensions fit your battery compartment. How long does a lithium wheelchair battery last?
LiFePO4 wheelchair batteries typically last 2,000–5,000 charge cycles before reaching 80% capacity — translating to 5–10 years of daily use for most wheelchair users. This compares favorably to standard SLA batteries which typically need replacement every 12–18 months with daily use.
Are lithium wheelchair batteries safe?
LiFePO4 (lithium iron phosphate) is one of the safest lithium chemistries available. It is thermally stable, non-toxic, and does not emit harmful gases. Every battery we supply includes a multi-function BMS that prevents overcharge, over-discharge, short circuit, and over-temperature events. All packs carry MSDS and UN 38.3 certification for safe transport.
What capacity wheelchair battery do I need?
For everyday indoor and light outdoor use, a 24Ah–50Ah battery is typically sufficient, providing 15–35 km of range depending on motor size and user weight. For all-day outdoor use, longer trips, or heavier-duty chairs, a 75Ah–100Ah pack is recommended. If you’re unsure, match the Ah rating of your existing battery or go one size up for extended range.
Can I fly with a lithium wheelchair battery?
Airlines have specific rules for lithium batteries on wheelchairs and mobility devices. LiFePO4 batteries above 300Wh require airline pre-approval and must be installed in the wheelchair — they cannot travel as cargo. Packs under 300Wh are generally allowed. We recommend checking with your airline before travelling and can provide documentation for battery transport compliance.
